Why and how

Posted on Dec 9th, 2006 by gardenjools : Artist/writer gardenjools
Its funny......I do not see myself as an artist - I am still a gardener! I am a muralist: I love big!
Where I live is the edge of the Great Dividing Range - the highest point between Sydney and Perth! So... we get typical mountain weather here, very cold, bleak winters (thank God for Spring and cottage gardens I say!)
About 5 years ago, I was living in a rented home here in Orange. This particular home had a tiny backyard with minimal garden space, however a very daggy, very old corrugated iron shed took pride of place. It occured to me that I could create a garden on this shed....paint it! So I did. Two complete walls became my garden - Hydrangeas, Hollyhocks, Poppies, Violets, Geraniums, Calla lillies, Butterfly bush, Daylillies, even a Rosella and a rabbit! (This shed can be viewed on my website www.joolsgardenart.com.au, go to wall murals.) It worked exceptionally well! Then I moved.....my lovely garden had to be left behind. Next I painted the door of a very dark and uninspiring toilet - The Great Barrier Door! then...I had to leave that behind as well.
It was while I was staring out my kitchen window during a cold and typical winters day, that it dawned on me that the lack of colour during these months was what got people "down" (besides the "chilly" temperatures) Nothing but lifeless looking trees, bare garden beds and row upon row of grey colourbond fencing. I came up with portable murals - perfect! I could have colour in the winter, I could move my garden to where I wanted. Now there is another most prevelant bonus - I don't have to water them! My murals have extended to Garden furniture - usable art, why not?
So.....through my search for colour I have discovered a talent I never knew I had. Through my desire to "cheer" up I have been able to create.
